How did you approach content creation and what were some focus points you wanted to do when you started?
When I started creating content, my main goal was to spread evidence-based nutrition information and dispel common myths. There’s so much misinformation out there and I wanted to help people cut through the noise with advice that was actually backed by science. But over time, I realized that just giving people the facts wasn’t enough. What really resonated was showing how to apply that information in a way that fit into real life. So my focus naturally shifted to making nutrition feel effortless, whether that’s choosing nutritious options at a fast-food restaurant, throwing together an easy balanced meal, or understanding food labels without overcomplicating it.
At what point did you start to see success on TikTok and how did you keep up with the latest content strategy?
I started seeing success on TikTok just a few weeks into posting. I think a big part of that was because I wasn’t overthinking it – I was just sharing nutrition content in a way that felt natural to me. TikTok moves fast, so it’s important to actually use the platform, see what people are engaging with, and think about what’s missing. I always ask myself, What would I want to see on my own FYP? But it’s not just about chasing what’s viral. It’s about finding the intersection between what people are interested in and what I genuinely want to talk about.
How important is it for you to not only stay consistent to your audience, but to also be as authentic as possible?
Authenticity is key because it’s the only way to create content long-term without burning out. If something feels forced, it’s hard to stay motivated and keep showing up. People connect with content that feels real, so staying true to a consistent message and approach matters. At the same time, consistency is important – not just in how often content is shared but in making sure the messaging stays clear and reliable.
Outside of social media, what are your interests and hobbies?
I love this question! Outside of nutrition and social media, I love music – especially classical and acoustic guitar. I also really enjoy video games and board games, and I love hosting game nights. Cooking is definitely a hobby, but only when there’s no cleanup involved. And I love hiking… but only when I’m home in Hawaii. Hawaii is the most beautiful and special place to me, and I love exploring nature there!
What made you decide to do a cookbook and how different did you want it to be as opposed to other ones?
I decided to do a cookbook because I never saw one out there like mine. Cookbooks can either feel too complicated, with long ingredient lists and time-consuming recipes, or too restrictive, making it seem like you have to follow a specific diet to eat well. I wanted something that fit into real life. So Easy So Good is different because it breaks everything down step by step: first, the nutrition basics, then building on that with simple guides, and finally applying those principles to actually easy recipes that are balanced and satisfying. It’s not just about telling you what to eat; it’s about giving you the tools to make meals that work for you without overcomplicating things.
Everyone scrolls and sees the good, the bad, and the WTF in food all the time on TikTok. Can you say that you do the same? And if so, what stands out to you? ○ I definitely see it all! But honestly, sometimes you need to see the bad and the crazy to really appreciate the good. Food on TikTok is such a mix of creativity, misinformation, nostalgia, and sometimes pure chaos, and while some things make me question everything, it’s also interesting to see how food fits into different people’s lives. What works for one person might not work for another, and I think that’s what makes food so personal. Even the wildest trends can tell you something about how people think about eating, cooking, and nutrition, and that’s always interesting to me!
How do you handle brand deals and which ones made an impact on you and your strategy?
This is a great question! I’m very picky with brand deals. I thoroughly vet every company that reaches out, and I always hop on meetings with their teams to ask questions about the efficacy of their product, their sourcing, and how they align with my values. If I wouldn’t use it myself or recommend it to someone in real life, I won’t promote it. As a dietitian, it’s really cool to work with different companies but to provide feedback and help improve them. I love when I can be part of the process – whether that’s shaping the messaging, suggesting ingredient changes, or making sure the product truly adds value.
[The best partnerships are the ones where I genuinely believe in] what I’m sharing, because at the end of the day, my goal is to recommend things that will improve people’s lives!
