Papa Johns Built a Wedding Campaign Without Leaning on Taylor Swift
Last month’s Taylor Swift wedding became one of the internet’s biggest cultural moments, prompting brands across industries to publish social posts and marketing campaigns designed to capitalize on the attention.
As part of the campaign, the first 13 couples getting married this month can enter by sending a direct message to Papa Johns on Instagram with proof of their name and upcoming wedding date. Selected couples will receive complimentary Papa Johns pizza to serve as a late night reception snack for their wedding guests. In addition to the food giveaway, the brand will spotlight participating couples across its social media channels, giving them the opportunity to share their wedding stories with millions of followers. Each winning couple will also receive exclusive Papa Johns wedding gifts to commemorate the occasion.
Papa Johns chose a different approach. Rather than centering its creative around the celebrity herself, the pizza chain built a campaign celebrating everyday couples, using the broader conversation around wedding season to reinforce what Shivram Vaideeswaran, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Papa Johns, described as an existing consumer behavior.
The strategy comes as marketers continue debating whether brands gain lasting value by reacting to celebrity moments as they argued that many brands rushing into Taylor Swift related moments ultimately elevated the cultural event more than their own identities, raising questions about authenticity and long term brand equity.
For Papa Johns, the objective was to avoid becoming another brand posting about Taylor Swift’s wedding.
“We show up in culture with a purpose instead of just chasing trends,” Vaideeswaran said. “We recognized a cultural moment built around celebration, connection, and shared experiences, all spaces where Papa Johns naturally belongs. By using agile social listening, we celebrated fans who were already participating in the moment and captured the halo effect of a massive cultural conversation without partnerships or direct mentions of celebrities.”
According to Vaideeswaran, the strategy was rooted in consumer behavior that predates the celebrity moment. He said couples have long incorporated Papa Johns into wedding celebrations, from featuring the pizza chain on invitations to serving pizza at receptions. Wedding season, he said, presented an opportunity to elevate that existing behavior while conversations about weddings dominated social media.
“Our brand makes the biggest impact when we bring people together around the moments that matter most to them,” Vaideeswaran said. “This campaign was designed to position Papa Johns as an entertainment adjacent brand with an authentic point of view. While engagement and earned attention matter, the bigger objective was creating a memorable brand moment that strengthened our connection with consumers and reinforced Papa Johns’ place at the center of life’s biggest celebrations.”
Vaideeswaran said the campaign also reflects the brand’s broader effort to evolve beyond being viewed solely as a quick service restaurant. He pointed to previous cultural activations, including the Skies to Pies campaign, as examples of the company’s strategy to participate in moments where it believes the brand has a natural role.
The execution relied on speed. According to Vaideeswaran, the marketing team identified the opportunity within days after social and earned media listening showed wedding season colliding with one of the year’s biggest cultural conversations. As speculation surrounding the wedding intensified, the brand moved quickly to launch creative that celebrated weddings broadly instead of attaching itself directly to the celebrity event.
“When social and earned media listening revealed that wedding season was converging with one of the year’s biggest pop culture phenomena, we moved quickly,” Vaideeswaran said. “We shaped the idea within days and created an activation that captured the energy of the moment while reminding fans that when people come together to celebrate life’s biggest occasions, pizza belongs at the center of the table.”
Papa Johns declined to disclose how much it spent on the campaign.
Vaideeswaran said the brand will ultimately evaluate success by looking beyond impressions and engagement to whether consumers continue embracing Papa Johns as part of cultural conversations and celebrations that matter in their lives.
